Don't forget to check out our Photos II (thumbnails only)
page!
Well, another Fly-in has come & gone.
Here's a couple of teaser pics of this year's happenings. Always a
picture of the current year's Fly-in fashion wear. And of course we can never
forget the guys in the band. The Honky Tonk Twisters. The big draw this year was
the return of the Army Blackhawk. This time they came to show off
their flying machine to the public
instead of bringing in the Adj. General to attend a funeral. Here's
a pic of a Hiller that flew in for
breakfast. For a complete overview of the weekend, check out the
photos in my friend Mike's Photobucket
album.
AND for something truly exciting (to me
anyways) is the video of me waving the
Blackhawk in for its landing.
About the same time as the Fly-in was going on,
we were in the midst of building the storage shed for all
of our airport toys.
It seems as the summer of 2007 rolls around,
we're finding ourselves in a buying/building spree. First of all, we
installed a hose reel near our fuel tank to make
refueling a bit easier. It was then decided as long as the hose reel
was installed, why not also keep the planes on blacktop while
refueling? So, one thing lead to another and we relaid blacktop on
the east end of the club hangar and laid down a new
fueling pad along with an overlay of
the old blacktop coming out the west end of the club hangar. As for
more building, we just inked the contract to build a 36' x 60'
storage shed/maintainence facility for our grounds equipment. This
will be going up shortly and I'm sure a picture or two will follow.
A 1972 C172 with a nearly new engine was recently purchased by
Al & Pat Van Straten, Jim Kobus &
Jason Marcks. The plane was just delivered and so is still
in the hangar getting a good waxing before venturing out.
We recently had a local soldier killed in Iraq
and the Adj. General flew in to attend his funeral. This is what
Generals fly around in now days: An impressive piece of
machinery that when here had only 120 total hours on the clock and
still had that 'new chopper' smell to it.
Here's some pictures from our 2006 Fly-in.
Here's a pic of our 'mighty flightline' on Saturday morning before
the crowds hit. A Mousketeer, 3-172s and a
couple of 150s. One of our pilots was AWOL in West Virginia for the
weekend and on Sunday we were short a 150 and due to concerns over
possible fuel contamination, we grounded the Mousketeer. Towards the
end of the day on Sunday we were faced with a 2½ to 3 hour wait on
the flightline but our customers pretty much took it in stride. It helped that the weather
was in the low 80ºs F instead of the humid 90ºs temperatures we
'enjoyed' before and after the Fly-in.
This is a family event... Our virgin eyes!!
Things slowed down a little bit Saturday evening while the band was
setting up, so SFC member Rick
Verhagen (L) took advantage of the time by having a cold
one or two or three....
Our Saturday night entertainment were the Honky Tonk
Twisters from parts unknown if from just down the road.
Sunday morning as always was a madhouse with
the usual several hundred folks stopping in for a potato pancake
breakfast. Of course yours truly tries to avoid such situations and
is more content to see what's on the outside of the hangar such as
things quite rare in these parts like oh say... a Yak 52?
When we originally asked the Outagamie
County K9 unit to stop in for a visit on Sunday morning we never
dreamed we'd also get the bomb squad to also stop in for a visit.
Nothing causes a stir quite like this: waiting out on the highway
to turn into a little country airport. These guys get to play with
robots and wear super padded
suits while working
with stuff that will blow off things bigger than fingers. And
the K9 unit? Here's Conan, taking it all in.
If any
SFC member has any pictures they'd like posted just send them to me with a
caption and I'll get them up.
