April 2008

Shiocton Flyers Club General Membership Meeting, April  9, 2008

Members present: Steve Knorr, Dave McNichols, Bill Kortens, Pat Van Straten, Gary Marcks, Glenn Riehl, Frank Sausen, Galen Timblin, Bob Dieck, Rick Verhagen, Brian Laedtke.

Vice President Knorr called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.

The minutes from the 2008 Annual Meeting were approved as read.

The Treasurer’s report was approved as read.

Old Business: Band for the Fly-in. The band we have hired for the Fly-in this year is called “Off the Record.”

New Business: The airport is closed (as of the April meeting).

Airport fees and dues. (This was briefly discussed the end of 2007 and tabled until 2008) The general consensus of the members present was to wait and discuss any changes in fees and dues until after the Fly-in.

The skydivers are going to give up a lot (they have 3). They don’t need the room and we do for future hangar space.

Airport committees. Several of our committees have had members leave or for other reasons have become defunct. VP Knorr asked for members willing to fill committees and so far we have the following:

Building/Grounds Committee:

Al Van Straten

Fly-in Committee:

Brian Laedtke

Dave McNichols

Steve Knorr

The IRS is conducting a systematic financial audit of clubs, organizations, for profits, non-profits, etc., SFC amongst them. We are now keeping financial records the way the IRS wants them to be kept. Another change we had to make is all our different accounts are now under one roof so to speak. All club monies and accounts are now under control of the Treasurer.

Bill Bertram is leasing a lot with the intention of building a hangar. In the course of measuring the lots, it was discovered that our old airport maps while showing the lots themselves, didn’t show the placement of the hangars in relation to the lot. Pat & Al Van Straten remeasured all the lots. Al is in the process of redrawing the map with the building placements on each lot.

Food Permit. A reminder was made for me to fill out the food permit for the Fly-in. As of this newsletter, the 2008 applications are not yet posted on the Outagamie County website.

Bob Reiland of Greenville is interested in doing the potato pancakes for us at the Fly-in this year. Instead of making the pancakes from scratch, he uses a regular potato pancake mix. Just add water kind of thing. Gary Marcks & Glenn Riehl to further investigate.

We are going to get several loads of gravel for the airport access road, around the machine shed and also, we are going to build up the driveway leading from the highway 54 access next to the shed, along the ditch and will tie into the airport access rod by Bob Polsin’s hangar. When completed, this will be our main access to the airport instead of through the Portlite parking lot. Before the gravel goes down, we need to investigate the possibility of laying in some drainage tile in the grass parking lot and also what we need for a culvert in the ditch alongside the access road. Gary Knapp to coordinate.

A motion was made and seconded and the meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm.

This and That: The airport is open.

What a crappy spring. The  John Deere and Big Jake mowers are ready to roll. Little Jake still needs a bit of fine tuning with its recently re-built engine. Actually, the runways have been largely mowed already with the John Deere. Things are a bit soft yet for Big Jake and our current every-other rainy day cold weather isn’t helping.

If you see piles of dirt behind the machine shed, the top soil has been stripped from where Bill Bertram’s hangar will be built. Speaking of hangars….

With our recent IRS audit, the days of SFC being run as a club are over. As of now, the airport is a business and has to be run as such, with all of our “I’s” dotted and our “T’s” crossed. And to that effect, the first order of review will be hangar leases. Other than the skydivers, there are no signed hangar contracts in either the current airport files or in the archives. If any hangar owner has a copy of a lease they signed, please bring it to the meeting so we can review and make archival copies. If there are no signed copies, SFC will start meeting with hangar owners to sign contracts. Nothing will change on the contracts as far as costs, this is only to start the process of the airport keeping our records up to date in case of future IRS audits.

Al Van Straten would like to establish a Safety Committee… to do safety things. It won’t hurt anything to have one and having one could potentially lower our airport liability insurance.

Condolences to Ken Braun who recently had a sister pass away.

The proposed agenda for the May meeting:

Report on Portlite property.
Bill Bertram/new hangar construction.
WRS lease reduction in frontage.

Hangar leases.

Establish Safety Committee?

Fly-in? Raise plane ride $ with cost of fuel? Review food & beverage prices.
???

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 14th at 7:30pm IN THE HANGAR. Board meeting at 7pm.
