2010 Fly-in Edition

Shiocton Flyers Club General Membership Meeting, July 14, 2010

Members Present: Dave McNichols, Randy Conradt, Gary Marcks, Pat Van Straten, Randy Rueckl, Bill Bertram, Al Van Straten, Rick Verhagen, Brian Laedtke, guests Tracy Hooyman and Ed Perkins.

President Van Straten called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.

The minutes from the last meeting were approved as read.

The Treasurer’s report was approved as read.

Manager’s Report: Pat is reporting that (as of the meeting) the runways are soft but useable.

Old Business: Al reported that with the departure of our attorney’s one-time replacement, the paperwork for the triangle area east of the intersection has been delayed in getting to the State. Once that paperwork is filed and gets back to us, we’ll finally own that chunk of airport property.

Portlite: We had the Portlite open the last weekend of June and Dave says the weekend brought in a nice tidy profit.

Gas tank. The new gas tank is in place, filled and ready for use. We will be putting a roof over the tank and the hose reel shortly to keep the weather off of them.

Guest Ed Perkins was here to check us out. He is building a Sonex and is looking for a place to eventually keep it.

Fly-in Business: We did a review of the committees, namely the food and beverage committee. We have a large number of Business League folks helping us this year so there will be a lot of new faces behind the bar.

Dave McNichols got a trailer load of free floor trusses from someone on his mail route. Dave and Steve Knorr are going to pick them up and we’ll be using them to build a stage for the band.

A motion was made and seconded and the meeting was adjourned at 8:35pm.

This and That: First of all, thanks to those very few that showed up to help at the Hangar & Plane wash. Ever see on TV where someone dies and only like 2 people show up at the funeral? That was the help received.

Those that get their newsletters mailed to you, let me know how last month’s 4 page format worked for you. If I have enough information to fill more than 3 pages, I’m planning on using our poster printer just to get some use out of it

I guess everyone knows how wet it is. The night of this meeting (the 14th) we received what, like 4 inches here at the airport. Right now it’s a struggle to get anything done in between rain showers. The airport is largely mowed except for the areas where there was standing water. The runways were being mowed literally at the same time that Black Creek was getting slammed with 3 inches of rain on Monday noon. Its too wet to get Big Jake out and collect the runway markers so I doubt very much those will get painted. As I’m typing this newsletter (Tuesday evening), A severe thunderstorm is rolling thru and if its raining at the airport like it is here near New London, I’m all but convinced the plane rides will have to be cancelled this year.

But, if by some stroke of luck we dry out enough for rides, Pilots, the home base phone number once again is 920-538-3149. Anything comes up whilst flying, call that number ASAP.

BUT, if the rides are cancelled, we can still cook up the brats and hamburgers that everyone raves about, we still have a damn good band for Saturday night, we just may have a heck of a crowd for Sunday breakfast and we have a pretty killer raffle going on. Not to mention beer, beer and more beer. So, we make do with what we end up with. This is the first truly wet year we’ve had since the canoe races of ‘93 so we’re not doing too badly.

I had planned on sending a somewhat final updated committee list along with this newsletter but it seems we have quite a bit of help from our friends from the Business League and as of yet, I’m not sure of where everyone will be slotted in. All we ask of the membership is when someone comes up to you and asks where they can help, don’t as some have done in years past and tell them we don’t need their help. Because we do. We don’t have enough of our own to be able to pull this thing off every year and it got to the point of get outside help or shut it down. Let’s get thru this year and see how it all goes.

The Portlite will also be open the entire weekend. Beer and liquor will be served along with a Bloody Mary breakfast on Sunday morning. Randy Conradt recently got his bartender’s license and this is how we’re putting him to work.

Thanks to Steve Knorr and I guess also Menards for the new to us new refrigerator to replace old Greenie. Hopefully we can get a couple more for Portlite and hangar use.

Welcome to new member Lowell Stephani of Black Creek.

For those of you reading this online or checking out the airport website, Jason Marcks has hung up his shingle so to speak and has a flight instruction page. He’s working on getting some brochures printed so those should be available shortly also.

Looking ahead to next month and the Appreciation Banquet, I’ll be passing out cards at the Fly-in with banquet day/time choices. Looks like open dates next month are the 14-15th, the 22nd and the 28-29th.

I hope to see everyone at the airport this weekend. Let’s as always have a safe Fly-in.
